The upcoming 2013 WITESOL Conference, directed at professionals in Higher Education and Adult Education fields, will be held on Saturday, October 26 at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The theme is “Multiple Literacies for the 21st Century:  Secondary, Adult, and Higher Education English Learners.” We will feature: Keynote speaker Martha Bigelow of the University of Minnesota, a Plenary Panel, concurrent sessions and more. Martha Bigelow is Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota, in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Her areas of expertise are:
*Second language acquisition,
*Schooling experiences of adolescent immigrant youth,
*Preservice language teacher education,
*Multicultural education.

Martha Bigelow wanted us to know that…

“My research interests span fields of education, applied linguistics, and cultural studies. While I have focused mainly on the language learning and schooling of adolescent refugees from East Africa, I am deeply invested in the schooling of all language learners as they learn in home, community and school settings. I am also interested in teacher education experiences and classroom pedagogies that support equity and access in education.”

*The role of native and second language literacy in the acquisition of second language oral skills

*The intersection of race, religion, gender and ethnicity among Somali youth
